Splinter star Shea Whigham has been tapped to appear in Martin Scorsese’s dramatic pilot Boardwalk Empire for HBO. The series also features Steve Buscemi and Michael Pitt, and chronicles the early 20th century origins of Atlantic City. (Source: Hollywood Reporter)
This is obviously great news for Shea, who’s an incredibly talented and hard-working actor, and I’m sure will quickly earn from Scorsese the same undying respect that he will always have from me. I couldn’t be happier for him.
Shea Whigham can also be seen in the upcoming Fast & Furious, in theatres Friday April 3rd.
Splinter editor David Michael Maurer, and cinematographer Nelson Cragg joined me for a second audio commentary track to be added to the Splinter DVD and Blu-Ray when it hits stores in the coming months. It was great to hang out with them both, and chat about the film.
So far the special features content on the DVD will include the following commentary tracks:
You can pre-order the Splinter [Blu-ray] or Splinter [DVD]
from Amazon.com.
Today we recorded the first audio commentary track for the Splinter DVD. Shea Whigham, Paulo Costanzo, and Jill Wagner all came out to play, and were great. I’m really thankful that they were able to spare the time and support the film like this. It really means a lot. Especially Jill, who came despite having the flu, and insisted she be put in her own little booth because she didn’t want to get anyone else sick. She’s a sweetheart.
It was a great to see everyone, and get to hear their insights into the film now we’ve all had a chance to absorb it, and have a little distance from it. Everyone had their individual things to add, and it’s always interesting to hear another perspective.
I’m hoping to get a chance to do a second track with Nelson Cragg our DP, and Dave Maurer, editor. This would be more focussed on technical aspects of production, and post, and it’ll give me a chance to cover some of the stuff I didn’t get time to discuss today.
It’s amazing to me that it was almost two years ago that I first read the script that eventually became Splinter, and this certainly felt like the home stretch of what has been an incredibly rewarding journey.
I hope people enjoy listening to these tracks when the DVD gets released. You can pre-order a the DVD and Blu-Ray from Amazon.com HERE. Or the UK edition HERE.
So, yesterday I reported that there was a Splinter related clue in the Yahoo Daily Crossword. Today they are at it again:

I am going to have to start paying more attention to crossword puzzles.

So, how cool is this… The clue for 11-down in today’s Yahoo Daily Crossword is “Splinter star Whigham.” Pretty cool I think.
Splinter stars Jill Wagner and Shea Whigham did exclusive interviews with ACED Magazine. Read about their experiences shooting Splinter, and life lessons learned from the front-lines of indie horror.
Jill Wagner:
“Jill Wagner played with GI Joe figures as a little girl, learned to shoot at 14, and studied management at North Carolina State. She tried modeling but said she couldn’t shut up long enough for photographers to take her picture. Then one day, her modeling agent called and said they needed a girl for a new show called Punk’d with Ashton Kutcher. The rest is history.”
Shea Whigham:
“Whigham’s broad background of work includes a long list of appearances in TV and film. His first big break, a starring role in the 2000 film Tigerland, revealed Whigham’s incendiary intensity in a challenging dramatic role. Adding to this was his versatility as a consummate professional in the 2003 film All the Real Girls and in the award-winning 2006 comedyWristcutters: A Love Story.”
Shea Whigham, one of the leads in Splinter just left me this voicemail message. Goes to show, even the stars of the movie are eager to get a glimpse of what came from all their hard work.
All I can tell you, and Shea is that it’s coming.
Play count: 43
Today I had the pleasure of lunching with Shea Whigham, one of the stars of Splinter. We haven’t had much time to hang out since shooting wrapped last summer because the man never stops working, and it was great to catch up.
Shea just got back from New Orleans where he was working on a film for director Werner Herzog. He was elsewhere in Louisiana before that, shooting The Killing Room for my friend Jonathan Liebesman (Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning.)
Prior to traveling to Oklahoma to shoot Splinter with us, he was in Romania working on Creek for Joel Schumacher (Lost Boys, Flatliners) who first worked with Shea in Tigerland back in 2000.
I think Shea actually did a couple more films since Splinter, but it’s hard to keep track. I think he has something like ten movies on their way to theatres right now. And I wish him every success with each of them, he’s sure earned it. He’s a great guy, and an amazing actor.
