How to Make A Splinter Pumpkin!

It’s October, time to start making your Splinter pumpkins!

Splinter Pumpkins

To learn how to make these splendid Halloween doorstep accessories from the lovely Jill Wagner, check the special features of the Splinter DVD, or watch the clip below.

Jill Wagner's Pumpkins

They are super easy to make, and last far longer than a regular pumpkin!

Have fun! And if you come up with something cool, be sure to send me a twitpic @splinterfilm and I’ll create a little gallery to feature everyone’s Splinter Halloween art.

Splinter ScreamFest Awards Dinner

Jill Wagner w Splinter ScreamFest Award

Last night, with the SciFi Channel broadcast of Splinter playing on the telly, I hosted a casual get together for some of the cast and crew of the movie. It was a great evening, and it was really nice to see everyone again and catch up.

Dave Maurer, Elia Cmiral, Christian Beckman, Ozzy Alvarez

It was also a chance for everyone to get their hands on the incredibly cool ScreamFest Awards which finally arrived last week. Editor Dave Maurer, Composer Elia Cmiral, SFX Makeup team Ozzy Alvarez and Danielle Noe, and Christian Beckman of Quantum Creation FX were all there to collect their honors.

Splinter wins Six ScreamFest Awards

The film won six of these amazing gold skull awards in total, including Best Score, Best Editing, Best Makeup, Best Special Effects, Best Directing, and Best Picture. The award was designed for ScreamFest by the team at Stan Winston Studios, and with Winston’s passing last year it was a fairly emotional moment for Christian and Elia, both of whom have worked extensively with Stan during their careers.

Second Splinter Commentary Track

Splinter editor David Michael Maurer, and cinematographer Nelson Cragg joined me for a second audio commentary track to be added to the Splinter DVD and Blu-Ray when it hits stores in the coming months. It was great to hang out with them both, and chat about the film.

So far the special features content on the DVD will include the following commentary tracks:

  1. Me, with stars Shea Whigham, Jill Wagner, Paulo Costanzo
  2. Me again, with Nelson Cragg (DP) and Dave Maurer (Editor)

You can pre-order the Splinter [Blu-ray] or Splinter [DVD] from Amazon.com.

Splinter DVD Commentary, Check!

Today we recorded the first audio commentary track for the Splinter DVD. Shea Whigham, Paulo Costanzo, and Jill Wagner all came out to play, and were great. I’m really thankful that they were able to spare the time and support the film like this. It really means a lot. Especially Jill, who came despite having the flu, and insisted she be put in her own little booth because she didn’t want to get anyone else sick. She’s a sweetheart.

It was a great to see everyone, and get to hear their insights into the film now we’ve all had a chance to absorb it, and have a little distance from it. Everyone had their individual things to add, and it’s always interesting to hear another perspective.

I’m hoping to get a chance to do a second track with Nelson Cragg our DP, and Dave Maurer, editor. This would be more focussed on technical aspects of production, and post, and it’ll give me a chance to cover some of the stuff I didn’t get time to discuss today.

It’s amazing to me that it was almost two years ago that I first read the script that eventually became Splinter, and this certainly felt like the home stretch of what has been an incredibly rewarding journey.

I hope people enjoy listening to these tracks when the DVD gets released. You can pre-order a the DVD and Blu-Ray from Amazon.com HERE. Or the UK edition HERE.

Awesome interview with Splinter star Jill Wagner on G4.  She seriously rocks! And you can read more about what’s going on inside the interviewer’s mind HERE.

Jill Wagner "Vixen of the Week"

Splinter leading lady Jill WagnerJill Wagner has been selected as Vixen of the Week over at HorrorMovies.ca who have been very supportive of the film, and were among the first to review it. They are an all-round great resource for horror fans.

They have some smokin’ hot photos, ripped from Jills MySpace page. Apparently Jill is the biggest draw on the site right now, beating out all other news and previous Vixens of the Week.  Way to go Jill!

Jill Wagner and Shea Whigham on Splinter

Splinter stars Jill Wagner and Shea Whigham did exclusive interviews with ACED Magazine. Read about their experiences shooting Splinter, and life lessons learned from the front-lines of indie horror.

Jill Wagner:

Jill Wagner

“Jill Wagner played with GI Joe figures as a little girl, learned to shoot at 14, and studied management at North Carolina State. She tried modeling but said she couldn’t shut up long enough for photographers to take her picture. Then one day, her modeling agent called and said they needed a girl for a new show called Punk’d with Ashton Kutcher. The rest is history.”

Shea Whigham:

Shea Whigham“Whigham’s broad background of work includes a long list of appearances in TV and film. His first big break, a starring role in the 2000 film Tigerland, revealed Whigham’s incendiary intensity in a challenging dramatic role. Adding to this was his versatility as a consummate professional in the 2003 film All the Real Girls and in the award-winning 2006 comedyWristcutters: A Love Story.”

Splinter Podcast #6 Hits the Web.

In the latest podcast episode I stay behind the camera and let Splinter star Jill Wagner take the spotlight in this tongue-in-cheek “how to” video that shows a fun and Splinterific way to celebrate Halloween.  Show support for the movie that Fangoria called “…one of the year’s best independent horror films” and build your own Splinter Pumpkin today!

[Flash 9 is required to listen to audio.]

I sent Jill Wagner an email last night with the link to the ScreamFestLA boxoffice page for the Splinter premiere so she could get tickets for her friends… then this morning I got this voicemail from her.  I forgot she has like 13,000 friends on her MySpace page!

We’re gonna need a bigger theatre.

A call from Jill always brightens my day.

Jill Wagner Is Sexy

Jill Wagner JoBlo’s “Arrow in the Head” site has posted a very enthusiastic and much appreciated news item about the upcoming theatrical release of Splinter, and one of its stars, Jill Wagner.  LINK  They refer to the film this way “highly buzzed-about” and “a fun, friggin’ concept!” - which is really nice of them. I’m stoked that they are stoked!
