Aptly named Australian New Zealand DVD rental service FATSO lets you rent movies without ever leaving your couch, just like NetFlix in the US, or Love Film in the UK.
I assume there will be more ways to buy/rent Splinter when it hits Australia (and I guess New Zealand) on September 9th, but this is the first one I found. You can reserve your copy, I think, by visiting Fatso HERE.
Thanks to eagle-eyed Twitter follower @media42 for noticing that Fatso is in fact based in NZ, not AU, and for these links to on-line rental sites that ARE:
Australian horror site Digital Retribution posted a review of Splinter back when it played at A Night of Horror film festival in Sydney in April. Splinter ended up winning Best Picture, and Best Special Effects at the fest and will be out on DVD and BluRay there on September 9th.
Below are a few select quotes from the review, or you can read the whole thing HERE.
“a tense siege film a la Night of the Living Dead, with splatter bordering on Raimi/Jackson territory, genuine suspense, a monster that is equal parts vicious and grotesque, great laughs and a whale of a time to boot.”
“Splinter is a great film… …a top-notch hi-octane thrill-fest…”
“Splinter is edge of the seat excitement from the word go. It’s as gory as you’d hope for, and despite the fact that it’s played dead-pan, extremely funny – the scares and the laughs play off against each other admirably.”
“Splinter is a film you really ought to watch.”

Official Australian BluRay art for Splinter. Gotta love the blood! Part of the Icon Insomnia series, Splinter hits stores down under on September 9th.

Australian “dark fiction blog” OzHorrorScope just published a glowing review of Splinter. Here are a few choice quotes, but you can read the whole thing HERE.
“Splinter is probably the best alien body horror film since The Thing and will have you on the edge of your seat, squirming with every twist and turn.”
”Splinter does everything right.”
“The special effects are superb for an independent film, easily on par with much bigger-budgeted efforts…”
“It is easy to see why Splinter has won six Screamfest Awards and was nominated for the Saturn Award for Best Horror Film. It is a solid film in an era of hit-and-miss horror fare.”
Splinter launches on DVD and BluRay in Australia on 9/9/09 from Icon Entertainment.
I was asked by someone on Twitter today (thanks @authorsbooks) if Splinter is available to watch instantly like it is in the US on NetFlix, iTunes, XBoxLive and Amazon. (Links on the right)
So, I asked the good folks across the pond at Icon Entertainment who are distributing Splinter in the UK (and Australia from 9/9/09) and they gave me the scoop:
Splinter is available right now on-demand from Virgin Media and Sky Box Office, as well as the UK iTunes Store.
So, that’s pretty cool. And I hear there will be more options in the near future. I love where this technology is going, and I really think this kind of technological advance is exactly what the film industry needs to survive the threat of on-line piracy. Give the audience a way to see a film on their terms and they will embrace it.

It’s no secret that I love to see the various international artwork for my movies as they roll out around the world, and this blood drenched, spike encrusted Splinter artwork from Australia is no expection. The MPAA’s jurisdiction over all American film advertising means that we rarely get to see anything as cool as this in the US.
Other fun art I have blogged about before includes Mexico, Germany, Poland, Turkey, UK, and I’m waiting to see if there’s going to be a special poster for Russia. Fingers crossed.
Splinter opens in theatres in Mexico on Friday June 26th. [UPDATE: it looks like the release date has moved to August 7th] As always, I get a kick out of seeing the posters from around the world, so here’s the Mexican one-sheet.

The title in Mexico is “Está Dentro De Ti” which I think translates roughly to “It’s Inside You.”
I came home tonight to find a gift from the Splinter international guys, a couple of copies of the just released Polish DVD of Splinter. The title there, as you can see below is CIERŃ.
As I have mentioned before, seeing how the movie looks in different countries around the world is really interesting to me.

Maybe it’s just me, but this is was a pretty great way to end an already awesome day. Thanks ContentFilm and Best Film Poland.
