The DVD and BluRay of Splinter just dropped to $17.99 in Amazon’s Halloween Horror Sale. Not much of a price break really I suppose, but every dollar counts in today’s economy, right? And there are some used
copies up there from about $10 if you’re into that sort of thing.
Actually they do have some pretty sweet deals in the sale, like one of my all time favorite David Fincher films Seven for $5.49, Shaun of the Dead
for $6.99, and a ton of classic ’60s and ’70s stuff.
Anyway…
Roll-over or click images for more info (depending on your browser).
Splinter is in the “crime” sub-category for some reason, I guess that is one of the sub-plots of the film, but not really the source of the horror. Why isn’t there a “creature” category? Why didn’t Splinter fall into the “monster” set? Answers on a postcard please.
Aptly named Australian New Zealand DVD rental service FATSO lets you rent movies without ever leaving your couch, just like NetFlix in the US, or Love Film in the UK.
I assume there will be more ways to buy/rent Splinter when it hits Australia (and I guess New Zealand) on September 9th, but this is the first one I found. You can reserve your copy, I think, by visiting Fatso HERE.
Thanks to eagle-eyed Twitter follower @media42 for noticing that Fatso is in fact based in NZ, not AU, and for these links to on-line rental sites that ARE:

Official Australian BluRay art for Splinter. Gotta love the blood! Part of the Icon Insomnia series, Splinter hits stores down under on September 9th.

It’s no secret that I love to see the various international artwork for my movies as they roll out around the world, and this blood drenched, spike encrusted Splinter artwork from Australia is no expection. The MPAA’s jurisdiction over all American film advertising means that we rarely get to see anything as cool as this in the US.
Other fun art I have blogged about before includes Mexico, Germany, Poland, Turkey, UK, and I’m waiting to see if there’s going to be a special poster for Russia. Fingers crossed.
A new review of Splinter posted over the weekend at Quadruple Z. Here are some quotes, but you can read the whole thing HERE.
“Splinter is an eerie, bloody slice of old-school horror fun.”
“a thick atmosphere of dread, spine-tingling tension and a fresh, disturbing new monster the likes of which have never been seen before.”
“This would make a great, midnight party movie to watch with friends who like their thrills and chills in a tight, satisfying package.”
I came home tonight to find a gift from the Splinter international guys, a couple of copies of the just released Polish DVD of Splinter. The title there, as you can see below is CIERŃ.
As I have mentioned before, seeing how the movie looks in different countries around the world is really interesting to me.

Maybe it’s just me, but this is was a pretty great way to end an already awesome day. Thanks ContentFilm and Best Film Poland.

On Saturday, May 9th, one of London’s largest newspapers, The Daily Telegraph printed an interesting article about the recent up-swing in direct-to-dvd movies and their respectability.
Splinter did not receive a theatrical release in the UK, only playing at a few festivals, and a sneak preview screening, so technically it was a direct-to-dvd release there.
I was invited to contribute my two cents, and did so happily. I am a big fan of innovative and unconventional distribution ideas for film. Something I share in common with screenwriter and filmmaker John August who blogged on the subject last year in his article Sundance, The Nines, and the death of independent film.
Anyway, the article in The Daily Telegraph is a good read, it talks about how perceptions of DTV movies are changing, how cult status is an elusive prize that is often won by unsung DTV fare, and they quote me quite a lot. They even let me have the last word!
You can read the full article on-line at Telegraph.co.uk.
Myself, Jill Wagner, and Shea Whigham will be appearing at Dark Delicacies in Burbank on Saturday May 16th at 2pm to sign DVD copies of Splinter. I will also be signing copies of The Grudge 3 which comes out on DVD that Tuesday (May 12th).
If you can’t get to the store in person you can still order signed copies HERE while supplies last.

Splinter is available to watch instantly, on-demand at Amazon.com. A seven day rental is $3.99, or you can download to own for $14.99. Of course, the DVD and Blu-Ray are also available HERE
.
Splinter is the No. 1 best-selling Blu-Ray at DeepDiscounts.com.
Although it’s actually cheaper if you buy it from Amazon through SplinterFilm.com
Over the past few days I have been running my own little contest on Twitter, I have a stack of UK DVD artwork for Splinter fans that post TwitPics of themselves with their brand new Splinter DVDs. Here are the first five winners:

Congratulations baywatchboy Travis68Charger evilontwolegs wayfarerXXXX and TheShape. While not everyone managed to follow the rules exactly… each will receive a DVD sleeve, signed by myself and the lovely Jill Wagner. For those not following along at home, the UK DVD artwork, looks like this:
Special mention to geekCouch who made it under the wire, but unfortunately with a Blu-Ray copy, not the lowly DVD. Sadly I don’t have any Blu-Ray artwork to give out yet… but I’m working on it.
A very in depth and insightful review that touches on a lot of things I have been saying in interviews lately. Definitely worth a read.
“an intense thrill ride”
“Splinter is a revitalization of the horror genre. It plays on so many levels, working into so many different subgenres, that it never runs out of steam.”
“…the film packs a serious punch, delivering solid chills, loads of gore and tension that tightly builds throughout.”
“The horror genre needs more films like Splinter.”

The WeekinRewind film blog and @WeekinRewind the Twitter stream of film critic Christopher Smith just announced a DVD giveaway for Splinter. He’s got five copies, and is orchestrating a massive Twitter contest to choose the winners.
You have to jump through a few simple hoops, but it’s all in the name of spreading the word about Splinter, and that can’t be bad for a little indie like this. So please take a moment to enter this thinking outside the box contest HERE.
Uncle Creepy reviewed the DVD/Blu-Ray of Splinter for Dread Central. He gave the movie 4 bloody carving knives and the special features 3.5 and said that ”Going through this Blu-ray was a blast!” and coming from someone who’s watched as many special features as Uncle Creepy, that’s high praise indeed. You can read the whole review HERE.
